Biography

Text and selection of content: José Vicente Saval

My life is more history than life until the nineteen-seventies and since then it has been more literature than life.

As Manuel Vázquez Montalbán used to say: “My life is more history than life until the nineteen-seventies and since then it has been more literature than life.” Internationally recognised thanks to his most outstanding character, the detective Carvalho, he was trained as a journalist and wrote more than 8,000 articles. He was involved in the struggle against Francoism and become one of the most important writers of the democratic transition period. He published poetry, novels and essays, with some incursions into the theatre. He brought a critical vision of the political reality of his time, always on the side of the most underprivileged.
